  • Sophomore Clay Weil ran the table Friday and Saturday at the Class 6A state wrestling championships at Hartman Arena to win the state title at 126 pounds.
In the championship match, Weil downed Cody McDonald of Derby 5-3.

"It was just a really good match," Weil said. "He's a really good opponent. I'm just glad I wrestled the way I did. I wouldn't change anything in that match if I could. I had a really bad ankle the last couple of weeks. I kind of got it healed back, but it went out again. I just kept fighting as much as I could and got my dream accomplished."

It was the Red Demons' individual state champion in two years after Dane Edwards claimed the 138-pound title last season. It was also Weil's second state medal after finishing fourth at 120 pounds last year.

Weil scored a first period takedown and nearly rode McDonald out in the second period, but gave up a late takedown. In the third period, Weil scored an escape and another takedown. McDonald was awarded a late penalty point for stalling, but Weil was able to circle around to kill the remaining seconds.

"I just had to stay away from him," Weil said. "You have to do whatever you can do to win the match. I wrestled him one time in Southern Plains in freestyle and Greco, but this was the first time I ever wrestled him in folkstyle. This was one of the matches I was looking forward to all year. I was glad I was able to wrestle him. Before the first takedown, I thought this was going to be a match, but after the first takedown, I could just tell."

    Weil ends the season 32-5.

"Two more years to do the best I can and give people as good a look as I can," Weil said.
