  • The McPherson High School Bullpup bowling teams made school history Thursday afternoon in the act of reaching state. The Bullpup girls won the Class 5-1A Salina-Sacred Heart Regional, played out at All-Star Lanes, while the boys finished second. It is the first time since the inception of the bowling program that MHS will take a full continent to the state meet. “We have had the boys or girls teams qualify, but not both,” MHS coach Herb Halinski said. “The kids are really excited. All of the spare practice has paid off and they understand now why we practice spares all the time.” The Lady Pups rocked the lanes with a 2,486 combined total to finish ahead of Wichita Heights, who will also be in Friday’s field at Wichita’s Northrock Lanes as the top two teams in the 5-1A regionals make the state cut. Individually, senior Crystal Nutter finished with a 648 to take second, followed not far behind by Jasmine Wann, who bowled a 623 for third. Makenzie Benson finished fifth with a 588 and Alexis Kieffer finished seventh by virtue of a 587. On the boys’ side, they notched a 2,658 collectively, just under 30 pins behind regional champ Sacred Heart. Individually, Jeff Reed took third with a 693, while Joel Morey had a 663 series, which placed him at seventh. While only two bowlers placing on the individual basis for the boys, Halinski was happy with the Pups’ overall performance on the lanes. “Everybody on the team contributed today,” Halinski said. “If somebody was down another person stepped it up for the team. I am so proud of each and every one of them. Everybody was loose all day and supporting each other on every shot. The younger players really stepped it up on a big stage.” Sacred Heart’s Ryan Franzen took first in the boys’ competition with a 772 series. Wichita Height’s Becca King took first in the girls’ competition with a score of 778, including a 300 in her final frame. The boys will bowl first Friday at Northrock Lanes in Wichita, as the boys’ 5-1A state competition begins at 9:30 a.m. The girls will take center stage at 2 p.m. Results Class 5-1A Salina-Sacred Heart Regionals at All-Star Lanes, Salina Girls Crystal Nutter 200-216-232 — 648; Jasmine Wann 213-174-236 — 623; Makenzie Benson 214-183-191 — 588; Alexis Kieffer 202-206-179 — 587; Rhianna Smith 177-133-210 — 520; Mayce Nightingale 139-183-172 — 494.
