The Dodge City Lady Demons fought back from a seven-point halftime deficit to force overtime in a 51-46 victory over the Liberal Lady Redskins Friday night at DCHS Field House.
Katrina Roenfeldt scored 17 and Chandra Sain 14 to lead the Lady Demons. Both hit four 3-pointers in the game to open up the Liberal defense to record the win.
“We stay after practice and work on our shot,” Sain said. “Sometimes they fall for us and sometimes they don’t. Tonight was a good night for us.”
The victory clinched a home game in the Class 6A girls sub-state tournament for the Lady Demons (11-9, 5-3). Roenfeldt said she and the other seniors are pleased to get one more contest at home.
“It’s great because I know I don’t have that many chances to play at home anymore because I’m a senior, but my team let me have another one,” Roenfeldt said.
Dodge City head coach Kelley Snodgrass was proud of the way the Lady Demons came back from two huge deficits in the first half. She said the team continues to not give up on themselves as the game gets into the latter stages.
“Liberal did a great job defensively and forced us to take some outside shots that we weren’t hitting; but then the girls just started knocking down shots and we were more aggressive on the boards after that,” Snodgrass said. “We said all season ‘one game at a time’, but we wanted this one for the seniors.”
Jessie Harshberger added 10 for Dodge City in the win. The Lady Demons shot 10-for-21 from the field and 11-of-16 from the free throw line after intermission — 5-of-7 in overtime — to come back for the win.
Jai Chapman scored 16 points and Jada Mickens added 14 in the loss for the Lady Redskins (7-13, 2-6). Liberal shot 10-of-32 from the field after halftime, including 1-of-5 in overtime.
The Lady Redskins scored the first seven points of the game, but Dodge City fought back and tied the game by the end of the first quarter at 11-11 with late three-pointers by Sain and Roenfeldt.
Dodge City made only two of its 10 shots in the second quarter as Liberal was able to push the lead up to nine and led 23-16 at halftime.
Sain hit two 3-pointers and Roenfeldt hit another as the Lady Demons pushed ahead by two to open the third period. The two traded the lead through most of the remainder of the quarter with Dodge City leading 31-30.

Both teams hit a free throw to open the extra quarter before Sain hit a three-point basket with 2:30 left on the clock to put the Lady Demons up for good. Dodge City hit its final four free throws to seal the victory.
The Lady Demons will host Hutchinson in their first playoff game Wednesday night at 7 p.m. in the Field House.
“We’re glad we have a home game; but at this point, records don’t matter,” Snodgrass said. “We’re just excited for postseason.”
