  • Class 5A state wrestling update: Two Trojans in finals

  • PARK CITY — The Andover Trojan wrestling team placed two wrestlers in the finals at the Class 5A state championships Friday at Hartman Arena.
    Andover is in 12th place after the first day of competition. St. James Academy leads with 141.5 points, followed by Goddard at 73.5, Kapaun-Mt. Carmel at 71, Mill Valley at 65.6 and Newton at 63.5. Andover scored 48 points.
    At 113 pounds, Paul Stuart opened with a 39-second pin over Chance Sorrell of Salina Central. In the quarterfinals, Stuart edged Marty Verhaeghe of Blue Valley Southwest 5-2. In the semifinals, Stuart was tied 2-2 against Tyler Kester of Pittsburg after two periods. Stuart scored an escape early in the third period and held on for a 3-2 decision.
    Stuart, 35-1, advances to the finals against Logan Terrill of Arkansas City.
    At 120 pounds, Jack Maki scored a 15-4 major decision over Wes Jameson of Pittsburg. In the quarterfinals, Maki edged Keaton Sander of Great Bend 3-2. In the semifinals, Maki gave up an early takedown to Sam Roy of Bishop Carroll, but took control from there to claim a pin in 5:09.
    Maki, 35-4, will face 38-1 Parker Howell of Kapaun-Mt. Carmel in the finals.
    At 195 pounds, Mike Lopez edged Jake Gramke of Mill Valley 5-4. In the quarterfinals, Lopez lost to top-seeded, unbeaten and top-ranked Preston Weigel of Hays in a 16-0 technical fall in 1:18.
    At 126 pounds, Griffin Bossingham lost in the first round to Cody Liles of Great Bend in 3:56. In the first consolation round, Bossingham pinned Andrew Miller of Shawnee Heights in 3:32.
    At 132 pounds, Elijah Gordon lost by pin to Zak Hensley of St. James Academy in 1:49. In the first consolation round, Gordon pinned Jared Scrimopiskie of Topeka West in 2:06.
    Lopez, Bossingham, Gordon will wrestle today in the second consolation round.
    At 160 pounds, Jake Dusenbury was pinned by Dalton Peters of Salina Central in 1:19 and Blake Younger of Shawnee Heights in 1:20, ending the season 26-17.
