  • Augusta’s wrestling team put on quite a show at the Winfield Class 4A regional tournament.
The Orioles got 11 of their 14 wrestlers into the semifinal round and had six advance to their respective championnships, which already guarantees a berth at next week’s state tournament. The Orioles lead the field with a whopping 170 team points. El Dorado is second with 93.5 points. Andover Central is third with 90 points and Wellington is fourth with 73.
Augusta has six wrestlers competing in the finals Saturday evening. Tyler Hildibrand (106 pounds) got a first-period pin to advance to his first state tournament.
Jake Goldenstein (113) avenged a loss earlier this season by beating Pratt’s Trae Foreman in the semifinal to advance. Goldenstein clinched his third straight trip to State.
Colton Clayborn won a tough match by decision to get the fhe finals. Wright Bosley (170) got a second-period pin to advance to the finals.
Cody Thompson (182), Ian O’Laughlin (220) and Blake Aitchison (285) all won their semifinal matches, as well. It will be the first trip to State for all three of them.
Nathan Moore (120), Josh Moore (126), Connor Spellman (145) and Blake Watkins (195) all lost their semifinal matches, but they still have a strong chance to qualify for State.
El Dorado has several Wildcats still alive to qualify for State, and a couple Wildcats advanced to the finals and clinched berths at State already.
Other area wrestlers who qualified for State already include Rose Hill’s Jake Wilson and Andover Central’s Paul Suhr.
    - Douglass had two wrestlers advance to the semifinal round at its home Class 3A regional tournament. Conner Porter lost in the 120-pound semis and will try to qualify in the consolation bracket. Zach Strother lost 3-2 in the semis, as well.
    - Bluestem’s wrestling team qualified two Lions to the Class 3A state tournament at the Douglass Regional. Lane Moran and Casey Garner both advance to the finals of their respective bracket by getting two first-period pins in two rounds. There are still other chances for other Lions to qualify for State.
