More than 400 people are expected to be running around in the dark in Augusta.
On April 12, Rainbows United will be presenting a Glow Run with 5k and one mile routes. Registration begins at 6 p.m. and the one mile family fun walk starts at 7 p.m. At 7:30 p.m., runners will leave The Point Events Center and head east to Ohio and turn south for a few blocks before winding through neighborhoods back to The Point for the finish line.
Because the event will include closed roads and hundreds of participants and volunteers, the group agreed to move up the time for the event so they didn’t create unnecessary problems for residents.
Rainbows United will also have volunteers make sure the residents who will be affected by the run will be notified of the event so they won’t be inconvenienced.
This route was chosen over a possible downtown route because of the parking and staging opportunities at The Point as well as the fact the route will be one long route rather than a loop requiring multiple laps.
This is advantageous for the city because streets along the route will be able to be reopened as soon as the final runner passes. This allows for street closures of around 30 minutes rather than 90 minutes.
The fundraiser for the non-profit agency will cover the city’s costs for extra time from the safety department. They agreed to pay any extra costs incurred up to $500 and they also provided their own insurance policy for the event.
The council approved the program 8-0.
