Clyde E. Weems Jr., 80, of Leavenworth, passed away, Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2014, at his home. He was born Oct. 9, 1933, in Greeneville, Tenn., the second of five children, to the late Clyde E. and Frances (Whiteside) Weems Sr. On Feb. 20, 1959, Clyde married Christel R. Riede. She precedes him in death. He is also preceded in death by two sisters, Elizabeth Watkins and Gladys Boyd; and two brothers, Wilbur Weems and Bruce Weems. Clyde graduated from George Clem High School in Greeneville, Tenn. in June 1951. He worked several jobs until 1955 when he decided to enlist into the United States Army. Clyde was in Vietnam from 1969 to 1970 where he earned two bronze stars. During his 30 years of service in the Army Clyde was also awarded the Meritorious Service Medal, Legion of Merit and the National Defense Medal. He retired as a Sergeant Major in 1985. Clyde most recently worked at the Lansing Correctional Facility and retired from there in 2000. He is survived by a son, Lorenz Weems of Leavenworth; two daughters, Patricia Buselt of Leavenworth and Shirley (Michael) Collins of Seattle, Wash.; five grandchildren, Sameula (Joshua) Hebert, Elisabeth (Morris) Pointer, Matthew Collins, Jonathan Collins and Keturah Buselt; four great-grandchildren, Jordan Hebert, Angelina Hebert, Malachi Pointer and Crystal Pointer; two sister-in-laws, Vania Weems and Pastoria Weems; and many cousins, nieces, and nephews. A funeral service will begin at 9 a.m. Friday, Jan. 24, 2014, at Calvary Baptist Church. Burial will follow at Leavenworth National Cemetery at 10 a.m. Arrangements made by R.L. Leintz Funeral Home.
