  • Bailey Reichardt took a couple of long jump shots that swished through the net to get Augusta’s girls basketball team off to a hot start against Collegiate.
When she was able to hit those, and Katy Nordman and Bre Burkett were able to chip in off the bench with some 3-pointers, it was a big relief for the Orioles. That carried Augusta to its first victory of the season Tuesday night as it beat Collegiate 40-29.
“It’s nice to get that off our back,” Reichardt said.
Augusta is now 1-5 on the season and hosts Wellington Friday night.
“It’s huge for us. We could easily get a win Friday, so it’s huge for momentum,” Reichardt said. “We just needed a spark.”
Unlike their usual fashion, the Orioles started well. Reichardt helped the Orioles jump out to a 7-2 lead.
“The first half, we were pretty strong. We knew we could go out there and get after it,” Reichardt said.
Nordman and Burkett’s 3-pointers built a 14-4 lead in the second quarter. Reichardt later hit a tough floater in the paint.
“That kind of expanded the floor and opened up some things on the inside,” coach Tracy Anderson said of the shooting. “Making a shot or two makes a big difference.”
Casady Marlnee was the main beneficiary of that. She was able to get to the paint much easier in the second half when she scored all of her team-high nine points.
Collegiate was able to attack Augusta’s defense better down the stretch, but the Orioles always maintained control.
“They made some individual adjustments, and we didn’t,” Anderson said. “...But outside of that, I was pretty happy.”
Tipton and the Orioles rebounded well all night. They allowed just one second-chance point.
Brooke Eberhardt and Maddy Leedom both scored four, Tipton scored three, and Hope Travaille and Morgan Kirk both scored two points.
