  • The El Dorado Wildcats boys basketball team closed out the Irish Classic with two solid wins on Friday and Saturday to capture the Irish Classic crown for the second straight season. On Friday the Wildcats won in blowout fashion defeating Rossville 69-39. “I thought this was our best played game of the tournament. Rossville is an athletic and aggressive team that counts on offensive rebounding success, and our team did a good job of dominating our defensive board,” said EHS head coach Gary Melcher. “This allowed us to get out into transition and we were able to shoot several lay ups.” El Dorado jumped out to a 21-15 lead in the first quarter and shut down Rossville with a 25-3 second quarter to take a comfortable 46-18 lead into half time. The Wildcats outscored Rossville 23-21 in the second half to earn the big win. El Dorado was led offensively by Jared Haury with 18 points including two three-pointers. Alec Hildreth had 11 points going 5-5 from the line and Travis House had 10 points. Dylan McAdoo, Johnstone Scott and Isaac Johnson each had six points. “All 12 of our varsity players were able to play a significant number of minutes, which is always good for morale,” said Melcher. On Saturday the Wildcats took on host school Chapman in the championship game. The Wildcats again won big defeating the Irish 58-38. “We were able to wrap up the tournament championship against the host Irish. We didn't play as well as we wanted to, but we did play well enough to win the game,” said Melcher. Travis House had 15 points to lead El Dorado with two three-pointers and going 3-4 from the line. Garrett Howland had a breakout game scoring 11 points for the Wildcats. Alec Hildreth and Jared Haury each scored seven points for El Dorado. “A 3-0 start to a season is always welcome, and hopefully will provide motivational fuel to continue to work hard to improve our play,” said Melcher. Isaac Johnson added six points, Dylan McAddo had four points and Nathan Ladson added three points in the win. El Dorado’s Travis House was named tournament MVP and Jared Haury was named to the All-Tournament team. The Wildcats will go on the road again today to Buhler for their last action before the Christmas break. “We will continue our season at Buhler on Tuesday, Dec. 17. We know this will be a tough game, as Buhler is always hard to beat at home. The Buhler game is also our league opener,” said Melcher. Josh Prim can be reached at jprim@butlercountytimesgazette.com.
