Robert Kent Overaker, former director of the Augusta Chamber of Commerce made an appearance in Butler County District Court today to discuss the scheduling of his preliminary hearing.
Earlier this afternoon, while meeting with his lawyer, Overaker learned the final specifications of his plea deal. Because the finalizations had taken place only hours before Overaker was scheduled to appear in court, his attorney felt it would be beneficial to give him some time to consider the bargain.
Overaker was arrested on suspicion of felony theft after the Chamber board of directors noticed financial irregularities during their monthly meeting.
He was charged with obtaining or exerting ownership of unauthorized property with a value of at least $1,000, but less than $25,000, which is a felony. There was an alternative charge of deception.
The felony charge carries a possible prison sentence of 5-17 months with the Department of Corrections, a possible $100,000 fine and possible restitution if convicted.
The court scheduled Overaker next appearance for 9:30 a.m. Dec. 9 to discuss the plea and if the situation calls for it, the scheduling of the preliminary hearing.
