  • On Friday, an eight-hour standoff between a possibly suicidal subject and law enforcement ended when a gunshot was fired within the subject’s vehicle.
The McPherson County Sheriff’s Office was notified of a possible suicidal subject armed with a revolver at 2 p.m. The subject, Steven W. Core, a 59-year-old resident of McPherson County, was located by Sheriff’s deputies at 2:56 p.m. at Maxwell State Fishing Lake.
The area was secured and deputies attempted to make contact with Core but were mostly unsuccessful and a standoff ensued.
Negotiators arrived on scene, and for about four hours tried to talk to Core, receiving very limited response.
At 11:09 p.m. a shot was fired from inside Core’s pickup, and he was immediately removed by officers.
EMS personnel attended to Core and prepared him for transport by Lifeteam air ambulance which was already on scene.

Core had been arrested by sheriff’s deputies Oct. 22 on a charge of aggravated indecent liberties with a child.
Agencies involved throughout the search and standoff included the McPherson County Sheriff’s Office, McPherson Police Department, Kansas Highway Patrol, McPherson County Emergency Management, Kansas Wildlife and Parks, Canton Police Department, Harvey County Sheriff’s Office, Newton Police Department, McPherson EMS, Canton EMS and Canton Fire Department.
