  • Paul Andrews: Sliding down the abyss of fear with God

  • You were not created to live life in fear

  • I was on the roof of my house the other day with a friend of mine trying to fix a leak. My house has a pretty good pitch to it. The new shingles are kind of like powdered doughnuts. The composite falls off and makes everything slick. I looked over at my friend, who is an experienced roofer and saw that he started sliding down. The shingles were sliding down, the hammer was sliding down and Steve was sliding down. (I thought about extending my hand, but no sense in both of us going down!) Any ways, Steve did not look panicked despite his dissension. He had done this before. The way Steve stopped sliding was to stand up. The traction that Steve had with his shoes was much greater than his jeans would give him. When Steve stood up, he stopped sliding and when we stand up to our fears, we stop sliding down its abyss.
God has not given you a spirit of fear. You were not created to live life in fear, to base your decisions off of your fears. God has created you to be free. He has given every believer a spirit of power, love and a sound mind.
The apostle Peter had given into fear. It is easy to do. He had done the very thing he swore he would not do- betray his Savior. He had denied Christ three times. When Jesus ascended to heaven, he sent his Holy Spirit. He said, “You shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you…” Acts 1:8 But Peter did something to activate his faith. Remember, the last time he had confronted a crowd, he cowed down. He denied that he even knew Christ. This time, “Peter stood up, raised his voice, and addressed the crowd.” Acts 2:14. Peter did something that defied his fear. It was this that activated his boldness. It was standing up and opening his mouth that caused the boldness of God to be activated in his life.
You do not have to tolerate fear and let it dominate you. Do not wait for a feeling of courage or bravery to come upon you. What you need to do most is to stand up, raise your voice and address the crowd. You need to face your fear and defy it. Do it afraid. God’s grace will be experienced the moment you decide to stand. Don’t slide down the abyss of fear. Stand. And one by one you can eliminate the fears that have held you captive for too long.
