Bluestem's cross country season ended Saturday when senior Brenda McCollum raced at State. She competed against a very tough 3A field at Rim Rock Farm, and took fifth place. This was Brenda's third straight State medal. She placed 13th her sophomore year and ninth last year as a junior.
As always, Brenda came out strong and remained in the lead through the first mile. She ran her first mile in a blazing time of 5 minutes, 24 seconds. Her goal was to finish in the top five and she did not disappoint. She finished her 4K in 16:17.
"This was Brenda's last year at Bluestem. She will be missed greatly on the team," coach Hatfield said. "She is a fabulous athlete, one of the best to come out of Bluestem, but she is more than that. She is a honors student, has a powerful work ethic and is an all around good kid. Along with her teammate, fellow senior Shelby Augur she has helped to make this a fun season. They will both be missed."
Brenda's accomplishments in cross country, besides her three State medals, over the past three years include winning medals in every race she ran, and League and Regional championships. She also holds the school record in the 4K.
McCollum recently signed a letter of intent to compete in both cross country and track at Baker University.
