In what has become a tradition, after the final game, the Oriole underclassmen got in two lines facing each other and raised helmets to form the tunnel.
The senior on the football team came through the tunnel with heavy hearts and emotions as they played at Hillier Stadium for the final time.
The Collegiate Spartans slowly and methodically dominated the Orioles on way to a 49-3 victory Friday night. With a victory by Rose Hill at Wichita-Trinity, Augusta's season comes to an end with a 2-7 record.
Jaques Williams was the Orioles' undoing. Williams rushed the ball 26 times for a whopping 292 yards. He had touchdown runs of 32, 34, 21, 47 and three yards as he was able to slice his way through Augusta's defense. When he seemed bottled up inside, he would spring to the outside and outrush the Orioles to the corner. On stretch and sweep plays, he was able to make the cutback for maximum gains.
The Orioles finished with 275 yards of offense to Collegiate's 511. Augusta had a couple scoring chances, but drives stalled. The Orioles' lone score came on a 21-yard field goal to cut the Spartans' lead to 14-3 early in the second quarter.
Brandon Smith made an interception near the goal line to thwart Collegiate's opening drive, but the Orioles lost the field-position battle the entire first quarter. Collegiate finally broke through for a couple of touchdowns and never looked back.
Senior quarterback Tristan Finch was 21 of 37 for 202 yards with two picks in his final game. He had 47 yards to lead the team, which struggled against Collegiate's much bigger linemen.
Chaydon Carter had five receptions for a team-high 88 yards. Connor Hurst and Smith both had five receptions, as well. Senior Anthony Castillo had four catches for 42 yards.
Hurst led the Orioles with seven tackles. Raef Hilt, Carter and Smith all had five tackles for the Orioles. Seniors Blake Aitchison, Greg Slaton and Caleb Laubhan all finished with two tackles.
