Douglass plays volleyball on a very different level than the other seven teams at the Substate the 24-12 Lady Bulldogs hosted Saturday.
After handling in-county rival Bluestem (25-8 and 25-8) in the first round, DHS matched up with Wichita Collegiate.
Cash Monroe led the way in the first match for Douglass with 10 kills, five digs and four aces on her serve. Shelby Bergley had 14 assists in Douglass’ 25-14 and 25-9 win.
Some of those were to Hailey Braddy who added seven kills and nine dis.
But the semifinals are where Bergley and Braddy took off. Bergley had 12 more assists in that match. Sara Dressler had seven assists against Collegiate.
Most of those assists were to Braddy who ripped 18 kills.
When the Lady Bulldogs saw a weak block effort in front of Braddy, they fed her the ball as often as possible and the high flying hitter took care of business. Monroe added seven kills and Kayleigh Roberts racked up 15 digs to keep points alive.
Neodesha was no match for Douglass’ high-flying style in the final match of the substate. The Lady Bulldogs won 25-10 and 25-14. At one point in the match, Neodesha was trailing 21-9 and five of their points had come from Douglass service errors.
Braddy had another 15 kills and eight digs in the finals. Monroe was at it again from the service line as she had five more aces along with seven kills and five digs.
Emily Nahr had five kills in the finals and 11 total for the three matches.
Douglass advances to the 3A State Tournament in Emporia Friday. They are the No. 7 seed and play in Pool Two against No. 2 seed Gypsum-SE of Saline at 8:30 a.m. and then in back to back games at 11:30 and 12:30 against No. 3 Silver Lake and No. 6 Marysville. The semi-finals and finals are going to be held Saturday.
