Sara Moore, owner of Hidden Lane Alpaca, rural Augusta, has approximately 20 alpacas, but she introduced the family favorite to the children at Mid-CAP this week and everyone became great friends.
Sara, and her daughter Abby, explained how they adopted the orphaned Andy and were forced to feed him goat’s milk with an eye dropper and later a bottle. Because he was bottle fed and has frequently stayed in the house, he has become attached to the family.
Alpacas are sweet natured, inquisitive and trainable. They live between 25-28 years and produce 5 to 10 pounds of fleece each year.
The Moores shear their alpacas in the summer because it helps them stay cool in the hot Kansas summer.
Andy made lots of new friends who couldn’t resist petting and hugging him
