As I write this letter we are in the midst of a government shutdown due to our government leaders playing childish power struggle games. Their actions or better lack of action has caused a great deal of hardship on those they are supposed to represent.
The terms of a budget are simple. You are not supposed to spend more than you take into your account. If the government was a personal business it would have been out of business long ago. The longer the government shutdown last the more it impacts our economy. Look where the stock market is at the present time. It is in a downward spiral.
I saw a good post last week where an individual wrote a letter to the government that due to his inability to balance his budget and control his spending he was going to shutdown. He informed the government that he would not be paying taxes. He then wrote that he was sure that the government would understand. I agree with him.
I cheered when I read about the World War II veterans who removed the barricades to the World War II Memorial because it was closed due to the shutdown and “stormed” the memorial. One veteran was reported to say that he stormed the beaches at Normandy and he was going to storm into the memorial.
For me, the height of the absurd action of the government shutdown was when it was reported that survivor benefits of those killed in Afghanistan could not be paid. When that became public knowledge a huge outcry erupted among the American people. A private organization then became the one that got the payments going to the survivors. Congress authorized troops for the Afghanistan War but would not pay the survivors of those who paid the ultimate sacrifice was ridiculous. I would vote for Congress to go to Afghanistan for the 9-12 months deployment to engage the enemy and let our soldiers live the “cushy” life as a Congressman - $184,000 yearly salary, medical paid, retire with full salary, vote themselves raises, etc.
We need to hold our elected officials accountable for this government shutdown. They had ample notice of it coming. The government shutdown impacts the regular citizen the most and they have little say in it. Let’s get this great country of ours back on its feet.
