For the past 20 years, Darrell Whitney has been the president of Friends of the Lake, a local organization that promotes the development and improvement of the lake and works to promote tourism to the Lake and El Dorado.
During that time he led the group in purchasing the cabins, building the amphitheater, building the laundromat, helping develop the horse arena at Bolder Bluff, purchase radios, guns and other necessities for the park rangers and do booths promoting the lake at sport, boat and travel shows in Kansas City, Topeka, Wichita, Oklahoma and the Kansas State Fair.
The Friends group has also had an aggressive program to plant trees at the park.
Darrell has been instrumental in many ventures in the community including Prairie Port, the Frontier Western Celebration, the Jazz Festival, the El Dorado Chamber, Main Street and other organizations.
He will continue to serve the community as a major volunteer, but wanted to give the opportunity for Friends to develop new leadership.
A large group of family members and camp hosts, Park employees and other members of Friends of the Lake recently wished him a sad farewell.
Craig Lorenson, who has served as the vice president of Friends of the Lake, presented Whitney with a plaque of appreciation for his service, and those in attendance recalled Whitney’s leadership activities with Friends and other organizations.
Friends of the Lake membership is open to anyone wishing to help promote the El Dorado Lake and State Park. For more information call the Chamber or Lorenson at Ace Hardware.
