  • Wednesday night at approximately 9:30 p.m., as part of an extensive manhunt for Kevin Welsh, wanted for two counts of 1st degree murder and attempted first degree murder, agents of the Kansas Bureau of Investigation were investigating a building near 8th and Poplar in Eureka.
A passing law enforcement officer had noticed the entrance to the unoccupied structure was tampered with from the last time it had been checked. Agents contacted the owner of the building and obtained consent to conduct a search.
Initial information indicates KBI agents clearing the building encountered Welsh, who pointed a handgun at the agents, causing the agents to engage with lethal force. Welsh was shot by the agents, provided first aide and then transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead shortly after 10 p.m.
In accordance with KBI policy, a thorough investigation of the incident is being conducted including crime scene investigation, autopsy and interviews of witnesses.
The Greenwood County attorney, Joe Lee, will appoint a special prosecutor to review the investigation. Once the investigation is completed additional information will be released.
