Losses of the slimmest margins don't get any closer than this.
Augusta's girls golf season came to a heart-wrenching end at Monday's 4A Regional on the Quail Ridge Golf Course in Winfield. Baylee Johnston missed qualifying for State on an individual basis by merely one stroke. Johnston shot a 107, one behind Andover Central's Shannon Loofs, the fifth and final qualifier who shot a 106. The top five individuals not on a qualifying team automatically go to State.
Johnston, who was very frustrated with the narrow outcome, had qualified for State her freshman year before missing out on last season due to injury.
Augusta as a team struggled on the course. The Orioles shot a team score of 505. Winfield (394), Buhler (396) and Andale (429) were the top three teams earning State bids.
Buhler's Taryn Torgerson won the individual regional championship to add to her incredible season.
Jackie Brandenburg and Becca Spyres both shot a 132 for the Orioles. Ashley Roby shot a 134 and Sarah Braddy shot a 149.
