Gregg Walls, a 1990 graduate of Circle, is the newest alumni to be recognized.
TOWANDA – Circle USD 375 has released the latest recipient for their “Distinguished Alumni” award.
Gregg Walls, a 1990 graduate of Circle and presently the Technology Education Teacher at Circle Middle School, as well as Platoon Sergeant 242 Engineer Company , Kansas Army National Guard, is the newest alumni to be recognized. He will be honored at halftime of the Circle-Clearwater football game in Towanda this Friday, Oct. 11.
“Circle has a rich tradition of excellence in the classroom. We are proud of our alumni and their accomplishments.” said Circle Foundation President, Deb Stephens. “We recognize our alumni to honor their personal and professional successes and to celebrate some of their lifetime achievements. Gregg’s commitment to our students and his devoted service to our country made him a natural for this award.”
Mr. Walls is a 1990 graduate of Circle High School. He graduated from Pittsburg State University with a BA degree In Technology Education and a MS degree in Educational Leadership. He and his wife Deana have three children.
Walls is the Technology Education Teacher at Circle Middle School, after joining the Circle staff in 1998. He has also coached numerous sports at both CMS and CHS and previously served as the Athletic Director at CMS.
Walls’ military record:
United States Navy
• Enlisted in the United States Navy in December of 1990.
• Completed basic training and advanced individual training at Great Lakes Naval training center
• Assigned to the USS Nimitz as an aviation boatswains mate
Deployed to the Persian Gulf in February 1993 in support of Operation Southern Watch.
Kansas Army National Guard
Joined the Kansas Army National Guard in 1998. As a combat engineer
Deployed to Iraq as a squad leader with Bravo Company, 891st Engineer Battalion in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2005
Currently assigned as Platoon sergeant for 2nd platoon, 242 Engineer Company, Coffeyville, Ks
Walls has received many military honors, including: Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Army Meritorious Unit Commendation, Army Superior Unit Award, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Army Overseas Service Ribbon, Navy Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, Army NCO Professional Development Ribbon, Army Service Ribbon, Small Arms Expert Marksmanship Ribbon, Combat Action Badge while deployed for OEF.
When asked the most memorable thing he learned from Circle schools, Walls replied, “It’s not what you know in life it’s what you do. Actions will always speak louder than words or good intentions. Be involved in the lives of those around you and take the time to care about what they do. Take the time to be involved in the community by volunteering your time to community projects and activities. Life is infinitely more meaningful when you take the time to serve others.”
