Area communities have lost two young people in separate weekend accidents. Augusta mourns the loss of 14 year-old Corbin Collier, who died in a car crash Saturday night and a Butler County teenager who was injured in a weekend ATV accident has also died.
Hevin Thomas, 16, had fallen from a four-wheeler that she was riding on with three other teens Saturday evening near SW 60th and Fulton Rd. Butler County emergency crews responded to the accident around 5:20 p.m.
Butler County Sheriff Kelly Herzet reported that the ATV was traveling around 30 miles per hour when the teen fell. He also stated that none of the teens were wearing helmets.
Thomas was taken to a Wichita hospital in critical condition with head and back injuries. She was removed from life support and died Monday night at a Wichita hospital.
On Wednesday morning Butler County Sheriff Herzet said, "We had a terrible weekend with the deaths of a 14 year-old and a 16 year-old. This affects the entire county."
Herzet reminds the public the importance of seat belt usage and staying buckled up at all times while in the vehicle.
"Also, if someone has the money to buy an ATV, they should be able to buy helmets. ATVs are not made to be ridden by more than one person," he added, "I've seen a number of ATV accidents with multiple riders and the passengers are usually the ones injured or killed."
