  • The Buhler Crusaders handled the Wildcats at home amidst the weather delays, lightning and rain 40-14 at BG Products Veterans Sports Complex in El Dorado.
The #3 ranked Crusaders started quick and never stopped.
"When you look across the field they really do not surprise you with size, we are pretty comparable to them there, but they are a fast, tough and physical football team and they know how to play the game the right way," said El Dorado head coach Jared Anderson.
Facing one of the best running backs in Kansas the Wildcats could not find an answer to stop Buhler's Riley Allen.
Allen scored his first of four touchdown on a 14 yard carry to put Buhler up 7-0 with 9 minutes left in the first quarter.
El Dorado tried to respond with a long drive of their own taking 6 minutes off the clock but were stopped on the Crusader 29 yard line on a failed fourth down conversion.
Buhler took over and after a few long runs by Allen, Allen found pay dirt on a 11 yard rush to the pylon to put Buhler up 14-0. Allen scored another touchdown on a three yard carry before a long weather delay and the Crusaders were up 21-0 with 9 minutes left in the first half.
"When we got in the locker room I told the guys that is where we want to be, we are not going to be the biggest guys ever but we want to be physical and do things the right way and it is kind of helps to have a nice running back like they have," said Anderson.
The Crusaders scored 40 unanswered points before El Dorado got on the board.
Buhler's quarterback Jace Williams found receiver Denton Branscom for a 14 yard touchdown, followed by Allen's fourth touchdown a 15 yard pitch for a score and a Dillon Engelland 58 yard touchdown run on fourth down.
"They are a good team and our kids fought and battled and they are a great team and we have to bounce back and see what we can do next week," said Anderson.
El Dorado had a chance to score in the third quarter with long rushes by Gage Armstrong and Garrett Howland but were stopped on downs inside the one yard line by Buhler.
The Wildcats finally scored after a long completion from Travis House to receiver Isaac Johnson capped by a House to Wes Haines 1 yard touchdown slant pass.
Armstrong scored on a 1 yard touchdown run late in the fourth quarter to close out the game at 40-14.
"We had some long drives but we have to finish our drives and not be complacent and that will be one of focuses this week, this is the time of the year with one game before district that we have to step on the pedal a bit," said Anderson.
Page 2 of 2 - Johnson returned a punt 60 yards for a touchdown but it was called back because of a block in the back penalty, Johnson also had a nice interception of a Williams deep pass in the second half.
El Dorado travels to Rose Hill next week.
"We need to win our individual battles and Rose Hill and Maize South are great teams and we are building to district play and we are getting close now and we need to start shining and do the right things all game and not just in spurts," said Anderson.
