WICHITA - Austin Titus continued to blaze the field Friday night when Douglass traveled to face Wichita Independent, but he had plenty of help.
Titus had the game's first points on an exciting 68-yard burst and Chase Banister threw three touchdown passes as the Bulldogs staved off Independent for a 34-20 victory, its second straight after starting 0-2.
Titus finished with another huge rushing night. He had 33 carries for 246 yards and two scores. Unlike last week, though, none of the other Bulldogs were able to get going on the ground.
That's when Banister stepped in and boosted the offense with the passing game. He completed 10 of his 13 passes for 120 yards to nearly match Independent quarterback Jordan Reed, who had 159 yards passing on just six completions.
Reed actually gave Independent a lead in the second quarter when he threw his second TD pass for a 46-yard strike to Stratton Klenda. Banister responded with a 23-yard TD pass to Cody Holthaus to tie the game at 14-14 after a missed 2-point conversion.
Banister gave Douglass the lead when he hit Drew Chadic for a 25-yard score. After Reed threw a 71-yard score during the fourth quarter, the Bulldogs' duo connected for another score late to seal the win.
Holthaus finished with 65 receiving yards on four catches while Chadic caught four for 43 yards.
Douglass's defense held Independent to just 96 rushing yards.
The Bulldogs will play against Bluestem next Friday night.
