  • The Andover Central Jaguars may have been defeated by Maize South Friday, but
they managed to play their defense aggressively enough to make sure they weren't beaten by a large margin.
Maize South beat the Jaguars 21-7. That was the score from 23 seconds left in the  second quarter up until the game's end. The Jaguars' season record is 2-2.
The second quarter was slow moving, with both teams eventually using up all of their timeouts for the first half in that quarter. Maize South scored late in the second quarter and a two-point conversion pass brought the score to where it remained for the rest of the evening.
Head coach Tom Audley attributes the maintained score to the Jaguar's aggressive defense in the second half.
"In the second half, I thought we put up a good fight," Audley said. "In the first half, I thought we were off. I was proud of our kids bouncing back in the second half and playing hard. We just didn't play very aggressive in the first half."
Audley said the Jaguars should have gotten the Mavericks on defense and added that Maize South played aggressively on offense. In addition, the team could have scored more in the second half.
"We had some opportunities in the second half for more points, but we didn't take advantage," he said.
The Jaguars' defense performance in the second half, Audley said, was a  highlight of the game.
"I thought our kids had a great half, especially when comparing it to the first half," Audley said. "I thought we played stellar defense in the second half. We just gotta get better at other stuff."
In preparation for the Cross-town Showdown next Friday, Audley wants to work on some small things.
"We gotta be able to rush the football, and I've been saying that all year, but we have to be able to get short yards when we can," Audley said. "We just didn't do that tonight. "There's some technical stuff that needs to get fixed. We just gotta show up ready to play for 48 minutes, and we didn't do that tonight."
