Popular illustrator Brad Sneed visited local schools this week.

Augusta elementary students were privileged to host popular illustrator Brad Sneed as their guest at the year's Meet the Author event.

Sneed, a native Kansan who lives near Kansas City with his family, explained the process of illustrating to students and the youngsters were truly excited about the process and enjoyed seeing how his work moves from the sketch stage into the finished illustration.

Sneed described his childhood growing up in the country and how his parents encouraged his love art.

He also told the students about visiting New York following college graduation from KU, to show his artwork to picture book editors and art directors. He met an editor who was looking for someone to illustrate a story about an exuberant grandpa with a booming voice. That story was Grandpa's Song, by Tony Johnston, and it proved to be his first opportunity to illustrate a picture book. Since then he has illustrated almost 30 books.
