  • Butler Community College Community will host the annual Butler County Spelling Bee at 1 p.m. Feb. 7 in the Clifford/Stone room in the 2000 building at the college, 901 S. Haverhill Rd.
    In its sixth year as sponsor, Butler is pleased to provide this opportunity in improving students’ spelling skills and increasing their vocabularies, spelling bee participation provides valuable experience in developing poise — a necessary skill for success in public speaking, performing arts and athletics.
    This event supports the mission of the college to develop responsible, involved lifelong learners and to contribute to the vitality of the communities it serves. The college also embraces the strategic priority to Contribute to Our Communities, sharing resources to build a better community, region and world.
    The bee is open to any school in Butler County which has applied to the Scripps National Spelling Bee at spellingbee.com by the Oct. 15 deadline. Schools that have applied to Scripps may register one student winner per school among students living in or attending school in Butler County who have not passed eighth grade on or before Feb. 1, 2014 and have not reached his/her 15th birthday on or before Aug. 31, 2013.
    This also will serve as the registration with The Hays Daily News Sunflower Spelling Bee if the student advances from the county bee.
    When schools enroll at spellingbee.com and pay the materials and enrollment fee of $120, they will receive exclusive online access to:
    • log-in ID and password for a teachers-only area of spellingbee.com.
    • grade-specific word lists and study sheets for grades 1–8.
    • study materials for your school spelling champion.
    • the 2013 Classroom Pronouncer Guide.
    • the 2013 School Pronouncer Guide.
    • from Encyclopedia Britannica, a free one-year subscription to Britannica Online for Kids (a $69.95 value).
    • from Middlebury Interactive, a free PowerspeaK12.
    • materials to conduct your Great American SpellCheck fund-raiser.
    • award certificates, and key information about your local spelling bee program foreign language course (a $100–$165 value).
    The Annual Sunflower Spelling Bee will take place March 8, 2014. The Bee will be hosted by The Hays Daily News. The Sunflower Spelling Bee champion will represent this area in the 2014 Scripps National Spelling Bee. Prizes for the area’s top spellers will include a six-day trip to the national spelling bee held in the Washington, D.C., area.
