  • In the 2013 home opener and the first game for El Dorado head coach Jared Anderson the Wildcats had an opportunity to shock Kansas football and defeat the #4 ranked McPherson Bullpups Friday night at BG Products Veterans Sports Complex in El Dorado.
McPherson picked to beat El Dorado by 40 plus points had to battle for their first victory for all four quarters with a scrappy Wildcats team.
"I was real pleased with the way our guys played, coaches did a real good job preparing for the game and the kids executed the game plan real well, hats off to them they played their butt off, it didn't fall our way at the end of the game but I was impressed by the way we played," said El Dorado head coach Jared Anderson.
The Wildcat defense played tough from the onset stopping a potent McPherson offense on fourth down and stalling another Bullpup drive that ended in a missed field goal in the first quarter.
El Dorado had a long sustained drive in the second quarter starting on their 8 yard line driving into the McPherson red zone before quarterback Travis House was picked off in the end zone by McPherson.
House got the ball back for the Wildcats as a tipped Kyler Kinnamon pass fell into his hands with under two minutes left in the scoreless first half putting the Wildcats on the Bullpups 25-yard line.
El Dorado drew first blood as House found Kody Melugin on picture perfect pass for a 25 yard strike on third down to give the Wildcats a 7-0 lead.
McPherson looked to tie it in before half but a fake field goal fell a few yards short of the Wildcats goal line.
"We had them shellshocked after the first half but they came out on fire to start the second half, we played the way we wanted to play in the first half." said Anderson.
McPherson took their first possession the length of the field capped off by a Jose Gloria 7 yard touchdown run to tie the game at 7-7.
The third quarter was controlled by the Bullpups on both sides of the ball.
With under 5 minutes left in the third quarter Kyler Kinnamon found TJ Stites on a long third down for a 52 yard touchdown giving the Bullpups a 13-7 lead after a missed PAT.
El Dorado looked to regain the lead on their following possession after a few first downs but House was intercepted looking for Isaac Johnson deep down the field.
Midway through the fourth quarter Kinnamon take a quarterback keeper 70 yards to pay dirt to give Mac a two touchdown lead after a two point conversion to Stites.
"We got a little tired, we lost focus and lost our assignments and let some big plays happen, but we are building so that we can play our best ball come district time," said Anderson
Page 2 of 2 - The Wildcats got within striking distance on their next possession with House capping a drive with a 12 yard draw to get the game to 21-13 after the PAT was blocked.
El Dorado tried to regain possession with a onside kick but McPherson fielded the kick cleanly.
The Bullpups drove inside the Wildcats 10 yard line before Kinnamon fumbled and was recovered by the Wildcats giving them an opportunity to tie the game.
El Dorado was stopped on their drive and was unable to convert on a fourth and long turning over the ball on down with under two minutes to play.
Gloria put the icing on the cake for the Bullpups scoring his second touchdown on a 8 yard carry with 20 seconds left giving McPherson the final of 27-13.
"We will make sure are legs are underneath us for Clearwater, we are pushing these kids in football and in the weight room to get a program here, we will fix our mistakes and put the best team that we can out there," said Anderson.
El Dorado travels to Clearwater this Friday looking for their first win under Anderson.
