  • It is not clear what happened following a theft near Lincoln Elementary School, but an unusual turn of events led to most of the items being returned to the owner.
Interim Police Chief Curt Zieman said a report was made on Friday of a theft of $350 from a vehicle near the school. Later that day, Tyson Nielsen, the Lincoln officer, reported that a box of items had been found on school grounds.
The custodian, Cathy Madison, was at the flagpole and saw a box near there with a hat in it. She was curious so she went and looked in the box to see what it was.
Inside she found a red hat, empty cell phone case and two $100 bills.
“It’s really unknown how it go there,” Zieman said. “There is the possibility the suspect might have dropped the items or put them there for retrieval later.”
The missing money is thought to maybe have blown out of the box.
