Christmas won't be the same in Garden City this year.

Renovation work at the venue that has held Santa's Christmas Carnival means the event will have to be canceled this year. Organizers vow it will return in 2014, The Garden City Telegram reported ( ).

The Garden City Recreation Commission announced the cancellation Thursday, saying it could not find another venue to hold the Christmas carnival while the Exhibition Building at the Finney County Fairgrounds is renovated.

Brian Seagraves, the commission's arts and theater director, said the Christmas Carnival has been held for 25 to 30 years and draws 2,000 to 3,000 people a year. It can't be moved because there is no other building in the city large enough to hold the carnival rides, he said.

Fairgrounds manager Angie Clark said events will be held inside the building while exterior work is done. The building will be closed from Oct. 28 to the end of the year, a time chosen because it will affect the fewest number of events, she said.

"We've tried our absolute best to accommodate everybody. But the Christmas Carnival, you can't have that just anywhere," she said.
