Jim Burns, 81, of Augusta, passed away Monday, Aug. 19, 2013. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Headley Funeral Chapel. Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the First Southern Baptist Church, Augusta. Burial will follow at Elmwood Cemetery, Augusta. Jim was born in Winfield on Sept. 13, 1931, to the late Charlotte (Counter) and Clarence Burns. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy serving on the battleship USS New Jersey during the Korean War. Jim owned Burns Drain and Sewer Cleaning in Augusta and he retired from WSU in 1994. He also was the City of Augusta Water Superintendent for many years. Jim was a member of the First Southern Baptist Church in Augusta, where he served as a deacon. On April 24, 1950 he was married to Mary Ann (Gilliland) Burns who survives him. He is also survived by his children, Kathy Hall and husband Jim, Barbara Cardwell and husband Mike, Connie Montgomery, Patty Apel and husband Doug, John Burns and wife Denise, Rick Burns and wife Renee, Debbie Taylor and husband Kevin, and Cindy Cummings and husband Jim; brother, Gary Burns and wife Margie; 21 grandchildren; 37 great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by parents; step father, Wendal Rader; twin brother, Johnny Burns; brother, Jack Burns; and sister, Judy Shelton.
