  • Kansas Governor Sam Brownback stopped by LakePoint of Augusta Monday afternoon to present the PEAK Award to the local facility.
Brownback was joined by Kansas Department for Aging and Disability Services (KDADS) Secretary Shawn Sullivan, Rep. David Crum, and Senator Ty Masterson.
The governor was led on a tour of the local facility and spent considerable time meeting and talking with residents.
Following the tour, the formal presentation of the award was made.
Sullivan explained that 200 facilities participate in the person-centered nursing homes, those who are successfully implementing a positive culture change through the Promoting Excellent Alternatives in Kansas Nursing Homes Program. As a result of the culture-change movement, accommodating the personal preferences of residents has become as important as providing the vital services and supports they need.
LakePoint was one of eight homes making the most progress in the program.
Governor Brownback addressed the residents and visitors, "This is such a beautiful facility and I've had a fun tour meeting some of the residents...I really like what they're doing here. They've got a high standards here," he continued, "We want to see people be able to do things they want to do and have a good quality life. That's what you deserve...we need to take care of the people who have taken care of us."
LakePoint Administrator Traci Hayden accepted the award on behalf of the staff.
