USD 490 is keeping up with changes in technology with not only an updated Web site and Facebook page, but also its own app.
“We are trying to keep our presence out there to the community with all of the social media and things going on,” said Doug Jensen, director of technology.
“The big thing is there is an app for that,” he said.
They have been working since last spring on an El Dorado Schools app.
Jensen said Jackie Clark, director of information, brought up the idea and they began looking into it and decided to move forward on the app.
While it is available now, they are still making a few changes to the app, which is available for Apple and androids.
It offers news, events, lunch menus and maps, as well as a link to Facebook, schools, contact information, a staff directory, PowerSchool, PIE Foundation information and RevTrack.
Jensen also gave a preview of what the new Web site will look like. It will feature a dominant revolving photo at the top, with the addition of an RSS feed and information on news and events, as well as information on the schools and district.
For Facebook, Clark has been keeping that up to date and they recently turned it into a fan page.
In other business, the board approved the purchase of four new busses.
The first two busses, which included air conditioning, were needed for new neighborhood routes related to the new middle school.
They approved the purchase of two busses from Kansas Truck for $150,070. This will be paid for out of capital outlay funds.
In addition, they purchased two trucks from Kansas Truck for $114,162 each dependent on approval of a grant by KDHE. These two would be replacement busses and they would look at the possibility of a lease purchase to see if that would be more beneficial than using capital outlay funds. The district did receive the first grant for $21,700 and are waiting to hear on the second grant for $25,000. These busses would be used for activities and field trips, as well as route busses.
