Butler County Sheriff Kelly Herzet is warning people about a possible telephone scam targeting the elderly in Butler County.
Herzet said his office was made aware of the calls on Aug. 13.
Residents have been receiving phone calls from a man named John representing himself as being with El Dorado Home Health.
Residents have reported receiving a recorded style telephone message attempting to schedule delivery of emergency medical alert systems, possibly gaining information as to when residents are away from home.
Herzet said El Dorado Home Health has stated they have not tasked anyone to schedule delivery of any medical equipment and have begun contacting patients to inform them of the scam. The telephone number being identified is (716)817-8527, originating in Buffalo, N.Y.
This is not a good number and Herzet urges anyone who receives a call to contact the sheriff's office.
"We want to know how many calls this gentleman is making in the county where we can make a case if they give information out," he said. "We want to put a stop to it, but it will be hard if he is in Buffalo, N.Y.
"If people don't respond, hopefully he will leave us alone."
Residents are urged not to give out their personal information or schedules to anyone who does not seem legitimate. If anyone has questions or concerns, they should feel free to contact the Butler County Sheriff’s Office at 322-4257.
