A Preston area teen was killed in a two-vehicle accident at Preston Saturday morning.
Drake Evert, a 16-year-old Pratt High School student, died in the accident that was reported at 6:44 a.m.
Evert was traveling northeast on K-61 highway in a 2000 Pontiac Grand Am when he crossed the centerline and onto the opposite shoulder on the west edge of Preston.
He crashed head on with a 2004 Peterbilt semi driven by Robert Myerski, 55 of Plains, Pa., said Kansas Highway Patrol Trooper Mark Crump.
The semi had pulled completely out of his lane and all the way onto north shoulder, Crump said.
The semi came to a stop upright in the north ditch facing southeast and the Pontiac came to a stop upright on the south side of the road facing south, Crump said.
Pratt County EMS transported Evert to Pratt Regional Medical Center where he died. Crump said it appeared Evert was wearing a seatbelt when the accident occurred.
Myerski was also transported to PRMC. His condition was unavailable.
The accident has closed K-61 at Preston and it will remain closed for several hours while a KHP Critical Highway Accident Response Team does an extensive investigation of the crash site. A CHART investigation is being done because a commercial semi was involved in a fatality accident.
Traffic is being rerouted while the CHART investigation takes place.
