  • NBC World Series update: Broncos win opener

  • Championship Week got started at the National Baseball Congress World Series with three games Friday at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium.
    The first week champion El Dorado Broncos opened play with a 9-4 win over the Nevada Griffons and the Seattle Studs rallied for a 9-7 win over the San Antonio Titans.
    Up 4-3 after five innings, El Dorado put things away with a four-run sixth inning.
    Clayton Taylor went two for six hitting for the Broncos, driving in three runs. Tyler Ware and Cody Roming each went two for five with two RBIs. John Coen went four for five with an RBI. Christian Cox also added an RBI.
    Bronco starter Jeremy McGowan went five innings for the win, allowing one earned run on six hits with two walks and a strikeout. Brenton Higgins struck out two in three innings. Chayse Gulzow pitched the ninth.
    Sam Hilliard started and took the loss for Nevada, lasting just two innings. Mitch Weis and Cody Faulkner finished the game. Faulkner struck out three.
    Michael Douglas went three for four hitting for the Griffons, driving in a run. David Chew went two for four. Michael Sterling and Brandon Downs each drove in a run.
    Down 6-5, the Seattle Studs scored four runs in the top of the ninth inning to get past the San Antonio Titans.
    Kyle Boe tied the game when he was hit by a pitch with bases loaded. Connor Savage followed with a three-run triple.
    Eric Peterson finished the game two for three hitting for the Studs, driving in two runs. Boe also drove in two runs. Savage finished two for five hitting.
    Taylor Thompson pitched 3 1-3 innings of relief for the win, striking out three. Starter Ross Humes struck out four. Mitchel Viydo and Brady Steiger pitched the ninth.
    San Antonio starter Ryan Benitez struck out five in six innings. Bryce Davis was charged with the loss.
    Jesse Baker led the Titans at the plate, going three for five with two RBIs. Mike Warren went two for four with two RBIs. Tony Ramirez went two for five with two RBIs.
