Meeting Tuesday evening
TOPEKA – The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) has scheduled a public participation meeting in response to an application from Butler County to modify the Butler County municipal solid waste landfill. KDHE is seeking the public’s input regarding the proposed modification.
The meeting will take place on Tuesday, Aug. 6, at 7 p.m. at the Butler County Community Building, 200 N. Griffith in El Dorado.
A brief presentation on the permit application review process will be followed by an informal opportunity for the public to get information on the proposed landfill modification. KDHE staff will be available to discuss how the proposed site geology, engineering design, and operation will be evaluated through the technical review of the landfill application.
The landfill is located at 2963 SW 40th Street, southwest of El Dorado. The total facility permitted site area remains unchanged at approximately 144 acres. The modification request proposes to increase the permitted disposal area footprint 5 acres; increase the landfill disposal capacity by 3.3 million cubic yards, and the maximum vertical closure elevation of the landfill by 50 feet. The proposed modification would increase the estimated life of the landfill an additional 19 years for a total estimated life of 81 years.
This application also includes a request to allow an alternative (soil only) final landfill cover design.
Anyone interested in learning more about the landfill modification and/or wants to provide input to KDHE staff early in the permit application review process is encouraged to attend.
By state law, KDHE must determine if the landfill application meets all required engineering, geological and environmental standards before issuing a permit. Only a preliminary evaluation of the application has been conducted at this time. KDHE will perform a detailed technical review of the application followed by a formal public notice before a final determination is made on whether to issue a permit for the proposed landfill modification.
