The Pregnancy & Family Resource Center has expanded to El Dorado.

The Pregnancy & Family Resource Center has expanded to El Dorado.

Staff members held an open house for the new facility, located at 121 W. Central, for donors and supporters last weekend.

"I think it's important once a woman decides to carry a pregnancy to term to be there and walk along beside her," said Liana Guy, executive director.

The facility focuses on the medical aspect of an unplanned pregnancy.

This location includes a meeting/counseling room, where people will first stop when coming in for assistance. They will talk with a volunteer counselor about the issues they are facing.

Then they will be offered a sonogram, which can be done on-site.

"There's three pregnancy centers in Wichita with sonogram machines and none in Butler County," Guy said.

They wanted to change that with this center.

"Everything has fallen into place rather quickly," she said.

To prepare for the opening, they painted and put down new flooring in the building. The flooring was all donated, as was the labor to install it. The sonogram machine also was donated to them.

"The churches are great about supporting us," said Guy.

The facility will be opening on Aug. 1, and they have a public grand opening planned for Aug. 18.

Their mission is to encourage healthy choices for women, babies and families. The main group they serve are college age and high school age women, although they will see anyone.

"We are making a concentrated effort to reach out to fathers," she said.

In addition to the sonogram, they also offer free diapers and formula, helping to relieve some of the pressure off of other agencies.

In the future they also hope to add parenting classes like they have at their Augusta location, which opened in 1998.

Another thing they will offer is support for students who want to be involved in a pro-life club at their school. They can contact Kimberly Andrews, center director, at

The facility will be open from noon to 5 p.m. Tuesday and noon to 7 p.m. Thursday. For more information, call 775-9372. They are always looking for volunteers to serve as peer counselors and receptionists. Those people will go through a screening and training process.

To help raise funds for the facilities there will be a Walk For Life held Sept. 7 in El Dorado. More details can be found at
