Heavy rain and strong winds may have been factor in fatal crash near Andover

A two-vehicle head-on collision occurred around 9:20 p.m. Tuesday night just east of SW Indianola Rd. near Andover. Heavy rains and strong winds may have been a factor in the crash that left one man dead at the scene.

A Dodge van was traveling on Highway 54 in the passing lane of eastbound traffic and was struck head-on by a Honda Civic traveling the wrong way.

Driver of the Dodge van, Billy J. Weems, 31, of Augusta, and his passenger, Adrian Behm, 16 of Goddard, were both injured and transported by Butler County EMS to Wesley Hospital. The extent of their injuries are not known at this time.

The driver of the Honda, a 39 year-old male from Wichita, was pronounced dead at the scene. His name has not been released at this time.

"An eye witness told us that they had attempted to get the Honda driver's attention for approximately a mile, but was unable to and we think it was because of the extreme wind and heavy rain," Butler County Sheriff Kelly Herzet reported this morning.
