  • Jerilee Wilson doesn’t want presents for herself for her seventh birthday on Saturday. Instead, she asks those attending her party to bring donations for Alex’s House.
This is the second year she chose to do this, but this year they are opening the party up to the public. It will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday at the El Dorado Dog Park.
“She started by helping me with fundraisers,” said her mother, Melissa Wilson.
Then Jerilee asked if she could have her own Facebook page to raise funds for causes important to her.
After thinking it over, Melissa decided to set up a page for her daughter since she wasn’t old enough to do it herself. So Jerilee’s Crafts for Critters was set up. Originally it was started to help all critters, until she learned of Alex’s House and now it mostly focuses on that cause.
This came about through one of Jerilee’s other efforts. Each year she collects change in a jar and challenges people to match it, then donates that to the Doberman Rescue Group. Melissa suggested they start collecting items and personally take them to a local organization so Jerilee could see first-hand who they are helping.
At her birthday last year she collected such things as a big bag of dog food, shampoo and bowls for Alex’s House.
Jerilee and her mother took those items to Alex’s House and met the founders. At that time they found out the owners were waiting for a permit to build a kennel building, which would allow them to house 10 more dogs.
“She wanted to help with that,” Melissa said.
“I had the idea of getting dog beds for it,” Jerilee said.
She set a goal of $1,000 which would purchase 10 extra large Kuranda dog beds.
To raise money she has been collecting cans and taking donations, as well as holding fundraising events. When she recycles her cans at BND they give her a little extra because she is collecting for a charity.
She has had three other people donate cans, as well as two friends who help collect them and Bright Beginnings saves cans for her.
Through these efforts she has raised $766.08 in nearly a year.
She also is trying to get items donated to build a can container to place at the bait shop at Twelfth and Main. They have found a gentleman to build it and are just trying to get the supplies now. More on those needs can be found on her Facebook page.
When Melissa asked Jerilee about her birthday this year, Jerilee immediately answered she wanted to give away her gifts again.
Page 2 of 2 - They talked about inviting everyone to collect more items for Alex’s House. Items they need include soft treats, paper towels, Dawn dish soap, stainless steel food bowls for large dogs, IAMS or Purina One canned dog food, Glucosomine-Chondroitin tables (breakable) and 1500mg vitamin C tablets. They also need donations of any pet foods for the newly started Alex’s House pet food pantry. The goal of this is to assist pet parents in need.
They will have dog treats and cake at the party.
Jerilee enjoys doing things to benefit animals because she loves all animal, especially frogs.
“I get to love them and play with them,” Jerilee said.
She said one time she saved a rabbit from a bird trying to eat it.
Her goal is to “save the animals because they can’t save themselves.”
