  • Legion team's rally falls short, Winfield gets sweep

  • It was that kind of dream scenario every kid dreams of with their friends in the backyard.
But for Augusta’s Legion baseball team, the ending wasn’t what it wanted. The Orioles were down 9-3 going into the sixth inning before putting together a rally that had the game-tying running at second base. With two outs and the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh, Kolton Schenker crushed a pitch deep to right field.
But instead of tying the game or possibly even winning it, Winfield made a spectacular catch in the field to end the Orioles’ run in a 10-8 contest.
The close loss came after the Orioles were hammered 10-0 in a four-inning run-rule loss as Winfield swept Augusta at home Monday night.
In the opener, Winfield’s pitching struck out the side in the second, finished with five total strikeouts, and allowed only one hit. Offensively, Winfield jumped ahead with a big fourth inning, scoring off of three RBI doubles and another RBI single for a 5-0 lead to take control and never look back.
In the nightcap, Winfield again took control with nine runs early on.
But this time, Augusta rallied. Kade Trebbe hit a one-out, two-RBI single down the left-field line to cut the Orioles’ deficit to 9-5. Cody Wesbrooks walked, then later scored on a two-RBI single by Schenker to cut it to 9-7.
Winfield scored an unearned run in the top of the seventh for a 10-7 lead.
Jake Lanier singled to lead off the bottom of the inning. He later scored on an RBI single by Dalton Eberhardt. Trebbe and Wesbrooks loaded the bases before the rally came up just short.
