  • The City of El Dorado will once again be hosting its Fourth of July Celebration, but this year the events will be held at the Walnut River Complex (the softball diamonds at El Dorado Lake).
“The hope is that this will continue to grow and add more events in 2014, and beyond, to utilize the space that that facility offers,” said Kevin Wishart, director of parks and recreation.
The events had previously been held at Forest Park, but they were limited by space there.
The events will begin with the start of the wiffle ball tournament at 9 a.m., a staple of the activities.
Then family games will get underway at 10 a.m., including a turtle race, water balloon toss, bean toss, hula hoop contest, sack races and other fun-filled activities. These will continue until about noon.
In addition, they will be serving free hot dogs, chips and drinks beginning at around 11:30 a.m. until they are gone.
Those attending do not need a state park permit if they park in the Walnut River Complex, although they will if they go on into the lake.
People are encouraged to bring their lawn chairs. There are some trees for shade and tents will be set up as well.
“It is designed to be family friendly for kids of all ages from 1 to 100,” Wishart said.
In addition to these activities, the free swim will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. at the municipal swimming pool.
Then that evening the city will shoot fireworks off of the dam.
People can park in the Walnut River Complex parking lot and watch the fireworks from the softball outfields, the bleachers or in their cars. The fireworks will begin at approximately 9:30 p.m. depending on weather.
“We encourage people to come out and bring their lawn chairs,” Wishart said.
People will not be allowed to shoot their personal fireworks on city property.
