DERBY—Augusta's Little Orioles 12-under Class C softball team had a strong showing at State this past weekend in Derby.

The Little Orioles finished with a 4-2 record—one loss was against the eventual champion Wichita Mustangs—and took third place overall.

Augusta started the tournament with a pair of wins, beating the Knights and the Ice before losing its first game against the Mustangs. Augusta and Wichita were tied 0-0 going into the fifth inning before the Mustangs put up three runs, which proved to be enough in the 3-0 contest.

The Little Orioles bounced back with another pair of wins, both of the come-from-behind variety. First, Augusta rallied in the final inning to score the go-ahead run against the Kansas Blue Sox for a 6-5 win. Then, Augusta faced the Ice again, fell behind early before rallying for a 4-3 victory.

The Orioles nearly came back again in their final game. The Elite took a 5-0 lead, but Augusta rallied with four runs in the top of the fourth to pull within one. Augusta held the Elite scoreless in the fourth and fifth, but couldn't get another run across in the 5-4 defeat.

Pitching and defense were keys for the Little Orioles, who played several low-scoring games. Gracie Johnston and Raine Harman carried the Orioles on the mound with strong performances throughout the tournament.

The team has qualified to participate in the USSSA World Series which will be played July 10 through July 14 in Kansas City
