Chance Cotton struck out a season-high 11 batters and the bottom of the El Dorado lineup sparkled as the Broncos beat Liberal 5-4 Friday night at McDonald Stadium to end a four-game losing streak.
Cotton shut out Liberal for six innings before being touched for three runs in the seventh. Trever Ezell came on in the eighth and earned a save allowing a run in the eighth.
Jose Rosado, Christian Cox and John Coen, batting in the Nos. 7-8-9 spots, accounted for three of the Broncos five runs and three of their five hits.
Coen drove in three runs with a single and a double. Cox scored twice on a walk and reaching on an error. Rosado, who doubled to open the fourth.
It was Cox who made the play of the game. In the third, he walked and stole second. Wade Stramp, who had doubled earlier, was on third. Coen hit an infield single that scored Stramp easily.
However, Cox never stopped at third and slid home with the Broncos' fifth run, which proved to be the game-winner.
Stramp's double in the second scored David Parrett, who had opened the inning with a double.
Parrett was lucky to play in the game. He went home to Edmond, Okla., after the three-game series in Hays. En route, he had an accident and totalled his car. However, he suffered only scratches and bruises. Nevertheless, he was held out of the Wellington game.
The Broncos will face Liberal at McDonald Stadium on Saturday night in the second of the three-game series.
