Rachael-06He wasn’t the typical “new guy” when he came to the Salina Fire Department twenty five years ago. No, this was a seasoned professional – a Director of EMS beforehand. His name was George.
As the medical shift one supervisor, I had the distinct pleasure of having George as my new employee. George was also in paramedic school when he arrived and there was never an easier one to oversee.
The only mistake I can recall this perfectionist ever made wasn’t a medical mistake at all – it was a cooking mistake.
George was the cook for the month and one evening he cooked up a batch of spaghetti. Problem was he put a few too many bags of uncooked spaghetti into the monster aluminum pot. As it grew, and grew, and grew – George frantically scraped off the overflow like a sailor scraping water off the deck of a mighty ship.
Another George recently left us – not through retirement but through death. His name was George Jones. He sang a song that – with some slight modification – is a perfect fit for George Elliott.
Elliott-A01“Who’s Gonna Fill Their Shoes”

The world is filled with emergency responders.

But just a few are chosen to tear your heart out when they perform.

Imagine life without them.”
No, there will never be another – stone-haired medic.

A man in a more crisp uniform.

Lord I wonder – who’s gonna fill their shoes?
God Bless the boys from the SFD.

Pawnshop Rick and Junkyard Hank

Much too soon their careers ended
They tore up the eighties and nineties

A bunch of Tom’s and a Brock

And old Kenny G still echoes through the years
You know the heart of emergency service

Still beats in scrappy BK
You can tell when they sounded their siren and lights

Old Moose, Joe, and Jerry

Why I can feel them right here with me

On this Red Eagle rolling through the night
Who’s gonna fill their shoes

Who’s gonna stand that tall

Who’s gonna play the accident scene

And the medical Cannonball
Who’s gonna give their heart and soul

To get to me and you

Lord I wonder, who’s gonna fill their shoes
Yes I do wonder, who’s gonna fill his shoes?
