Jeremy Hutchens is suspected of stealing a car and leading Augusta Police Officer Quenten Shoopman on a high-speed chase on West 7th Street at about 4:30 a.m, Wednesday morning.
That pursuit ended when both the suspect and Officer Shoopman crashed trying to negotiate a turn on wet roads at the intersection of Kellogg and Santa Fe Lake Road west of Augusta.
Officer Shoopman was injured in the accident and hospitalized. He was released Thursday evening.
Hutchens led officers an a manhunt that resulted in his capture later Wednesday morning.
He had his first appearance before Judge Mike Ward Friday.
Hutchens was already on a no bond warrant for failure to appear related to a previous aggravated assault charge.
The new charges stemming from Wednesday’s incident include:
• Burglary (Hutchens is accused of stealing the car he used in the chase)
• Felony theft
• Aggravated Failure to appear
• Felony possession of marijuana
• Felony obstruction of an officers
• and felony fleeing or eluding an officer.
Judge Ward set Hutchens’ bond at only $25,000 despite his previous charges.
Hutchens could have a hearing as soon as Monday to attempt to reduce his bond on the previous charge. If the no bond warrant is reduced, Hutchens could bond out of jail again while he awaits trial on both the previous and current charges.
