  • This was a no-brainer.

  • This was a no-brainer.
Last year, Jacob Goldenstein burst on the scene with an incredible freshman campaign that came just short of a state championship.
This year, Goldenstein bounced back to finish with an undefeated 39-0 record and dominated his way to the state championship. There, he won a hard-fought match to win the 106-pound title. And for that, Goldenstein earns the Augusta Gazette’s award for performance of the year. He is the first non-senior to earn this award under the current staff.
So many things make Goldenstein a special wrestler. His go-to move, the cradle, is simply suffocating. Rarely does a wrestler get out of that on his own before Goldenstein scores a 3-point nearfall. But coach Brandon Terry didn’t let Goldenstein settle for just being good at cradling. Throughout the season, Goldenstein became just as good with so many other moves; he became a versatile wrestler as any.
What might separate Goldenstein from other great wrestlers is his willingness to continue to improve. He never gets satisfied and has an incredible drive and determination. When it’s all said and done, he could be one of, if not the most, successful wrestlers Augusta ever has had. That’d be quite an accomplishment.
