As a result of votes by participating Class 4A schools, Kansas High School Activities Association will divide the 4A classification into two sub-divisions for five sports.

There will be a Class 4A-Div. I and a 4A Div-II for the sport of volleyball, football, basketball, baseball and softball. These sports now will have 4A state tournaments and champions for both divisions starting next school year, except for football, which will start in 2014.

Other sports, including wrestling, will remain with one state tournament.

The split of the 64 schools will put the top half of the most populated schools in the current 4A into Division I and the bottom half into Division II.
