While their youthfulness showed at times, Augusta's baseball team played beyond its years more often than not. Now, the team is getting recognized for it.
The Orioles had six players earn All-Ark Valley Chisholm Trail League-Div. IV honors. Kolton Schenker was the lone Oriole who was named First Team All-League.
Of the Orioles' All-Leaguers, two were seniors, one was a junior and the other three were just sophomores.
"Wish we had more First Team honors, but three of our six players receiving honors are sophomores and still have two years in our program," coach Doug Jefferson said. "Plus, we had several freshmen start for us or get some innings, so I'm excited for the upcoming years."
Schenker earned First Team honors as an outfielder. He played all three positions at different points of the season for the Orioles. He finished with a .900 fielding percentage, tops for Orioles outfielders.
At the plate, Schenker led the team with a .419 batting average and tied for the lead in RBIs with Connor Hurst (18) and walks with Mason Hiser and Tyler Roberts (12).
Schenker also was one triple away from tying the Class 4A state record for a season with seven. He hit two home runs, as well.
On the mound, Schenker had several no-decisions and finished with a 3-2 record. He had a 2.71 ERA while giving up 23 hits 24 walks with 33 strikeouts in 31 innings. Opponents only managed a .192 average against him.
A few other Oriole outfielders represented the team well. Connor Hurst earned Second Team All-League honors. Michael Albright earned Honorable Mention.
Hurst had an .816 fielding percentage while spending time both in the outfield and a little time in the infield. At the plate, Hurst was second with a .392 average and had a home run.
Albright had a perfect fielding percentage in the outfield. He had three assists. Albright hit .356, was second on the team with 11 steals, He had 14 RBIs, several of which were clutch hits throughout the season.
Mason Hiser was named Second Team All-League as a pitcher. He finished with a team-high four wins and was second with 29 innings pitched. He finished with a 2.63 ERA while allowing 25 hits and eight walks while striking out a team-high 45 hitters. Opponents averaged .205 against him.
Senior Chase Winter was named Second Team as a utility player. Winter played multiple positions, including shortstop and second base. He had a .370 average and led the team with 27 total hits and 14 steals. He had a triple and a home run. Defensively, Winter had an impressive .975 fielding percentage.
Senior Tyler Roberts earned Honorable Mention as a catcher. He was one of the Orioles' top defensive players with a .977 fielding percentage.
Roberts had a big season on the mound. He was 2-2 with a 2.04 ERA while allowing just 13 hits and 12 walks while striking out 23 batters. Opponents only averaged .146 against him.

Augusta finished the season with a solid 13-7 record before losing to Clearwater in the semifinal round of the regional tournament.
