The Augusta City Council approved more than a quarter of a million dollars in street repairs Monday night.
Most of the work will be completed by the early of July.
The bid for the main projects came in more than $50,000 below the city engineer’s estimates. The bid from Cornejo and Sons came in at just over $156,000. The estimate for the work had been over $208,000.
That allowed the council to select on of the alternates for be completed as well.
The asphalt projects that will be completed include:
• Knebler Addition entrance from Ohio St.
• Josephine between Robbins and Dearborn St.
• Colonial Drive between Ranchwood and Woodland.
• Timber Drive between Ranchwood and Woodland. And
• Broadway between West and Lulu.
The alternate project that was selected was Quail Dr. between Ranchwood and Woodland.
That project was selected because it works well with the Colonial and Timber Dr. projects that will be completed in the same area.
Councilor Mike Wallace wasn’t happy that Gregg St. in his ward was going to stay on the alternate list for another year.
He questioned whether the alternate projects truly advanced or if some projects remained alternates indefinitely.
City Manager Bill Keefer assured him that the alternate projects do advance in priority but Quail was just too expensive at this point to be included.
“I know it isn’t getting done because it is expensive and it isn’t in ward three or four,” Wallace said. “But it is expensive because it is bad.”
Keefer didn’t disagree that sometimes the process of selecting the projects could be subjective but he said the city was addressing that problem.
“The new pavement management plan will help prioritize and keep the process from becoming as subjective,” Keefer said. “It will help give direction to both the committee and the council going forward.”
The council also agreed to contract with Andale Paving to do a demonstration project for $132,832. That project will replace Oak St. between 4th and 6th streets, including curb and gutter work with a new paving method called roller compacted concrete.
